What Is the NPA Aspirant Prosecutor Programme?

First introduced in 1998, the Aspirant Prosecutor Programme is a 12-month full-time internship aimed at training future prosecutors. It’s hands-on, intensive, and takes place in Magistrate’s Courts around the country.

During the programme, you will:

  • Work alongside experienced prosecutors
  • Gain courtroom experience and handle real case files
  • Learn legal procedures, ethics, and evidence handling
  • Be formally assessed for possible permanent appointment

Salary & Duration

  • Contract Length: 12 months
  • Stipend: R252,855 – R292,596 per annum (LP-1 to LP-2)

Who Can Apply?

You’re eligible if you:

  • Have completed an LLB degree (or will complete it by start of programme)
  • Are not currently doing Practical Vocational Training (PVT)
  • Are a South African citizen
  • Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and integrity
  • Are not already permanently employed in DOJ&CD or NPA (unless applying for a transfer)

Key Duties

  • Attend formal and practical training sessions
  • Undergo continuous assessment throughout the year
  • Must complete all assessments to be considered for permanent appointment
  • Comply with the Prosecutors’ Code of Conduct

📌 Note: Completing the programme does not guarantee placement at your training centre. Final placement is at NPA’s discretion and may be anywhere in SA.
